Visibility Share (V3)

Visibility Share (V3)

Visibility Share Overview

Visibility Share provides you with a true SERP visibility comparison analysis for any domain up to the top 100 results based on your managed keyword set. It goes beyond traditional keyword rank tracking to reveal how far down in a SERP an organic web rank position actually is, as well as your actual ranking competition, which these days is far more than just other sites.

Background & Requirements for Visibility Share

Keywords need to be added to the platform as managed elements for related data to be viewable. Visibility Share is available to eligible accounts as a paid upgrade. Data is based on the first search engine results page and is available on a weekly basis. Desktop fold is based on the screen size of 1028 x 765 and mobile fold is based on the screen size of an iPhone 10 (5.8 inch).

Visibility Share Use Cases

  1. Identify how much of the SERP real estate your domain covers.
  2. First Fold Opportunities spotlights keywords where there is opportunity for a web ranking in the first fold. This can help zero in on top priority keywords for traditional ranking optimizations.
  3. Replace Share of Voice with Share of Visibility for more accurate and useful comparisons, especially with competitors.
  4. Find the true competitors against your domain's rankings, including not only other sites but also search features such as Featured Snippets, video carousels, People Also Ask boxes, and dozens more.

Visibility Share

Input Selector

Domain(s) to compare: Enter any domains to which you want to compare in the "Input Domains" text box. By default the domain of the profile you are in is displayed. The color of the domains in the chart can be modified via the Universal Competitors setting.
Compare to Top Competitors: Click in the Domains dropdown menu and select "Top Competitors." The competitors you chose in the Universal Competitors settings will be displayed, and all charts and metrics will now display them alongside data for your own domain.
Date Selector: Select the beginning and ending weeks for which you want to view ranking data. This defaults to the most recently ended week. This date selector is incremented by weeks because Visibility Share data is updated weekly.

Visibility Share Chart

Choose a tab above the chart to view trend data for the domain(s) selected.

Share of Visibility: This displays a percentage representing the relative organic visibility of a web ranking result, that is calculated based on the pixel depth weighted by the first fold opportunity. The higher the percentage, the more visible a ranking is on the SERP. A Share of Visibility of 100% means the ranking position is at the top of the page with nothing above it. This is the best metric for comparison between keywords with competitors. Appearance in SERP Features, like local results or otherwise, are not included in this.
First Fold Opportunity: First fold opportunity shows keywords where there is an opportunity for Web results to show up in the first fold. You can view how many keywords you already have ranking in the first fold, how many have an opportunity to rank in the first fold but don't now, and which keywords have no opportunity (since Google's paid and universal results may be occupying all of the first fold).
Visibility by Fold: This displays the keywords that are ranking in a particular fold of the search result page. Folds are calculated based on a standard screen resolution of 1024 x 768. The first fold is the default view when search results load. Each subsequent fold represents the results visible upon scrolling down on the page.
Average Web Rank: This shows the average position of your keyword’s regular website listing on Google. It doesn’t count things like images, maps, or special boxes—just the standard blue links. A lower number means you're ranking higher.
Average True Rank: This shows the average position of your keyword on Google, including all types of organic results—like images, maps, videos, and featured snippets. It gives a more complete picture of where your content appears among everything Google considers “organic.”
Average Visual Rank: This shows the average position of your keyword when you count everything that appears above it on the page—ads, featured snippets, image carousels, etc. If your website is the first regular result but two features show above it, your Visual Rank is 3.

Visibility Share tables

Keyword Visibility Share: Click the dropdown selector to choose from the following metrics to include in the table (Share of Visibility is shown by default). Selecting "All" will display all the available metrics listed below:
Search Volume: Displays the average search volume for the corresponding keyword based on Keyword Planner.
First Page Results: Displays the number of results on the first page of the search results.
Visual Rank: The rank of the keyword including any search features that may display above it. So if a keyword ranks as the first organic web result, but there is a Featured Snippet and an Image Carousel above it, the Visual Rank of the keyword is 3.
Visibility: Displays the number of pixels the result takes up on the SERP.
Fold Visibility: Indicates in which fold (how far down the search results page) the keyword is ranking.
Pixel Depth: The sum of the pixel heights of all features and results that show above a given keyword in the search result page, with the top of the page as 0 pixels. The lower the Pixel Depth metric number, the higher on the page the keyword's result appears. For example, if there are two search features taking up 20 and 30 pixels respectively, and one organic web result taking up 10 pixels, above a keyword's appearance on the search results page, then the pixel depth of that appearance is 60 (20 + 30 +10).
Share of Visibility: Displays a percentage representing the relative visibility of a web ranking, calculated from pixel depth weighted by first fold opportunity and the search volume of the keyword. The higher the percentage, the more visible a ranking is on the SERP. A Share of Visibility of 100% means the ranking position is at the top of the page with nothing above it. This is the best metric for comparison between keywords and with competitors. Think of it as a replacement for Share of Voice in search.
Top Competitor: This table displays top ranking competitor domains based on the tracked keyword set with their Visibility and Wtd. Pixel Rank metrics. Trended View can be toggled on to view a single metric trend. Notice that unlike traditional competitor views, Visibility Share includes the search features that most often compete with your results.

Clicking the greater than sign (>) in front of any domain or feature in the Top Competitor view will reveal if there are any significant variations in search appearance for results from that domain or feature (for example, site link snippets vs. default snippets).

Visibility Share Filters

Feature: Checking any of the search features in this list will filter your results to show only results where those features occur. Click the greater than sign (>) by any feature to see if there are further options. Filter items shown will vary by account according to which features are shown in SERPs for that account.

Pixel Depth: This allows for filtering on the pixel depth to first result for the searched domain on the first search engine results page with options for Equals, Greater Than, Less Than or Between.
Rank: Available in Visibility Share 3.0. Choose True Rank, Web Rank, or Visual Rank in the drop down to then filter by Equals, Greater than, Less Than, or Between.
