Google Analytics Historical Data Retrieval via Flat File

Google Analytics Historical Data Retrieval via Flat File

Overview

The standard Google Analytics integration will retrieve daily historical data for the last 13 months prior to the date of authentication. The integration requires that the Google Analytics view that is integrated does not contain a modification of the URI field as outlined here. If there is no Google Analytics view available that meets this condition, historical data can still be retrieved via flat file export by following the steps outlined below.

Background & Requirements

Listed below are the dimensions and metrics required for integration. Additional dimensions for search engine and location can be included where possible, otherwise the Search Engine will be Google and the Location will be set as the primary country associated to that domain profile within seoClarity.

Required Dimensions & Metrics

  • Landing Page - Page level organic analytics data is mandatory and cannot be excluded.
  • Date - Including the date field allows for correct mapping to historical dates.
  • Traffic - The naming convention for this might be seen as entrances, sessions, visits or something similar. This should be the organic metric used for reporting internally. For uniformity, this is seen as Traffic throughout the platform.

Optional Metrics
  • Bounces - Bounce Rate can included in place of this. If either metric is brought, the corresponding metric will be calculated. If Bounces are given, the platform will calculate Bounce Rate and vice versa.
  • Transactions - E-commerce conversion data
  • Revenue - E-commerce conversion value data
  • Goals - Any relevant analytics goal data can included. This includes up to 20 total goals and their corresponding conversion value and rate.

How To Export Organic Search Data from Google Analytics

There are multiple ways to export Organic Search data from Google Analytics, this is just one example.

1) Navigate to the Channels Report (Acquisition > All Traffic) and select Organic Search to filter the analytics data accordingly. Keep in mind filters are permanent changes to how the data is processed in GA. Segments filter out a subset of data and do not permanently change the data.

2) Set the Primary Dimension to Landing Page and add a secondary dimension for Date. Optionally additional analytics goals can be added to the table if needed.

3) Set the date range to the largest available date range to be integrated without incurring sampling, this can vary but 3 months is a good starting point. Ensure the greater precision option is selected and that the report is based on 100% of all sessions.

4) Ensure the Show rows option at the bottom of the table includes all report data in one table view and select the Export as CSV option to download the data.

5) Repeat steps 1-4 as needed to retrieve the full 13 months of historical data. Once downloaded, the files can be delivered via using the FTP/SFTP method or email to support@seoclarity.net. The sFTP credentials can be attained via the Integration Settings.
