Tracking AI Overviews in Rank Intelligence

AI Overviews are a SERP Feature in Google Search that present an AI-generated summary for selected queries. They include clickable links to relevant sources for each section of the response. Here's an example of a typical AI Overview:

There are three options for tracking AI Overviews in our platform.
  1. Rank Intelligence On-Demand Data
  2. Rank Intelligence Keyword Rankings
  3. Rank Intelligence SERP Features

Rank Intelligence On-Demand Data

The On-Demand Data feature in Rank Intelligence (formerly Ad Hoc Data) allows you to upload a group of any keywords and get back a report of rank and search volume. There is a nominal per-keyword fee for each submission. Now you can also request a check for the presence of AI Overviews in those keywords. 

Use Cases
  1. Identify New Opportunities: Upload a list of potential keywords to see if AI Overviews are present. This can help you discover new content opportunities where your domain can be featured.
  2. Competitor Analysis: Use the AIO Competitors tab to see which domains are frequently appearing in AI Overviews. This insight can guide your competitive strategy by identifying which competitors are gaining visibility.
  3. Performance Tracking: Monitor your domain’s rank within AI Overviews over time to assess the effectiveness of your content strategy.



Once a keyword list has been submitted and processed, the result appear in an AI Overviews tab in the report.

Keyword: A list of the keywords that were submitted for the Ad Hoc Data project.
AIO Present: "Yes" indicates an AI Overview was present in the SERP for that keyword at the time of the processing of the submission.
xxx.com Rank in AIO: If your domain is included as a clickable source in the AI Overview, this column shows its position within the overview. A rank of 1 corresponds to the left-most source in the first source carousel in the result. If there are three sources in that carousel, they will have ranks 1 through 3, from left to right. If there are further source carousels further down the result, they will each be ranked in order from top to bottom and left to right within each carousel.



The AIO Competitors tab shows all the domains that appeared as sources in any AI Overviews found for the list of submitted keywords.

Competitor: List of domains found as sources in any of the AI Overviews found for this keyword list.
Average Rank: The average rank for this domain among all the discovered AI Overviews.
Top 1 Rankings: The number of times this domain appeared as the leftmost source in the first source carousel in AI Overviews shown for this keyword list.
Top 3 Rankings: The number of times this domain appeared among the first three sources in the first source carousel in AI Overviews shown for this keyword list including the amount shown for the top 1 rankings.
Top 10 Rankings: The number of times this domain appeared among the first ten sources in the first ten sources in AI Overviews shown for this keyword list including the amount shown for the top 1-3 rankings.

Rank Intelligence Keyword Rankings

Rank Intelligence Keyword Rankings shows any of your managed keywords that displayed an AI Overview during your current date range when the AI Overview SERP Features filter is activated.

Use Cases
  1. Trend Monitoring: Activate the AI Overview SERP Features filter to track which of your managed keywords are showing AI Overviews. This helps you stay on top of search trends and adjust your strategy accordingly.
  2. Content Optimization: For keywords displaying AI Overviews, analyze the organic web results to optimize your content for better visibility.
  3. Historical Analysis: Review past data to understand how often AI Overviews appear for your keywords, helping you predict future trends and adjust your SEO tactics.



The metrics shown in the table are for the organic web result of the keyword, not the AI Overview.

Rank Intelligence SERP Features

Keywords whose SERPs contain AI Overviews can also be viewed in the SERP Features feature in Rank Intelligence, using the AI Overviews filter.

Use Cases
  1. Keyword Discovery: Use the AI Overviews filter to find keywords with AI Overviews in their SERPs. This can guide your keyword strategy by highlighting terms with high visibility potential.
  2. Visibility Assessment: Check your domain’s rank within AI Overviews to understand your current visibility and identify areas for improvement.
  3. Content Strategy Development: Analyze the Highest Ranking URLs to see which pages are linked in AI Overviews. This can inform your content creation and optimization efforts to ensure your pages are featured.



SERP Features filtered for AI Overview


Keyword: A list of the keywords where the SERP they rank in contained an AI Overview during the selected date range.
Volume: The search volume for the keywords.
Rank within Feature: The position of your domain among the sources in the AI Overview. If your domain was not included, this will show 100+ (i.e., not ranking)
Highest Ranking URLs: If your domain is shown as a source in the AI Overview for a keyword, the page it links to will be shown here. Clicking the magnifying glass displays all the ranking URLs found in that AI Overview.
