Content Types Overview

Content Types (also known as Page Types) are built to give you an overview of how traffic to your site breaks down into major sections. They allow your URLs to be put into segments like product pages, category pages, or in any other way that is best suited for your site and organization. This analysis was a lot harder in the past but we have made it so that the functionalities can be grouped together in order to see the necessary data. Now you can see how much traffic goes to your “category pages” or the “product pages” instead of taking guesses at what traffic went where.

Content Types can be critical to review when Google releases algorithm updates, or doing overall categorical business-level analysis. When set up, Content Types will show which section of the site is being affected most and which sections are not. This is a great view to see what the algorithm change might have been about and what you can do to recreate the successful parts of the site.

Background & Requirements for Content Types

In order to apply Content Type filters, they must first be created. Content Type filters can be created anywhere they are present as a filter via the edit icon. Once a content type is created or updated, it can be used and applied for filtering immediately.

Content Types Features

For a quick overview of Content Types and how to use them, watch this video:

Content Type filters can be configured and are available in multiple platform features (Rank Intelligence is seen in the example below). While Content Types can be used for any URL matching filters, we most commonly see them created for the Homepage and Category and Subcategory pages.

How to Create and Edit Content Types

1. Select the edit (pencil) icon for Content Types to display the Content Types pop-up

2. Select the Create New button to create a new pattern or the edit button to review and edit an existing pattern.

3. Enter a name for the Content Types filter
4. Select the pattern match type and enter a pattern. To add additional filters rules, Select Add Filter and repeat the process.
5. You can set up to 10 patterns per criteria with a 250-character limit each.

6. Once all patterns for this Content Types filter have been entered, select the Submit button.

How to Use Content Type Filters

After Content Types Filters have been created, they will be available for use across multiple platform features when selecting the Content Types filter. Simply select the corresponding Content Types filter and the Apply filter button to view corresponding data for that Content Type filter. If an invalid Content Type filter has been added, the UI will display an error message. Previous invalid URLs will not be plotted.

Content Types Summary

Comparing different content type sections of the site is always a great practice. Using Content Types will keep your site’s data organized and help you see how those specific areas are performing. Content Types can be used in a similar manner as Content Groups within Google Analytics (though GA uses re2 regex syntax).
