What is Keyword Difficulty?

Keyword difficulty is a metric to help users understand how to prioritize and determine how hard it is to rank for a specific keyword. It uses a range of factors to determine how difficult it might be to rank for the given keyword. Keyword difficulty tells you which keywords to invest time and effort into first. It can also help to identify any low hanging fruit in the keyword set. These are the keywords where there’s an opportunity for a business to gain visibility, giving you a better shot at appearing higher up the SERP. Learn More

Keyword Difficulty in seoClarity is based on a proprietary algorithm using everything we know about a particular keyword and the pages that rank for it. Leveraging our Research Grid data set, we first calculate Topical Page Authority (how strong a page is for each of the topics it ranks for) based on its visibility in the SERPs, the intent of the keyword, the intent of the page, the intent of other pages ranking for the keyword and other common SEO data points. This is then used to determine how difficult the current incumbents would be to beat based on how closely their topical authority aligns with the keyword and their strength on the topic
