Topic Explorer lets you search any keyword or topic within our Research Grid database to discover related terms that share similar audience intent. It’s a great way to understand what your audience is really searching for, so you can create content that speaks directly to their needs and interests.

Background & Requirements for Topic Explorer

To begin viewing data in Topic Explorer, simply search for a keyword to view related metrics. Topic Explorer uses multiple data sources including: Research Grid and clickstream data. Research Grid contains 300+ million keywords and is seoClarity’s proprietary dataset for competitive research including Top 100 rankings, search volume, CPC and our own calculation of Search intent. This dataset is curated and continuously maintained by our editorial team. The clickstream dataset contains 28+ billion keywords and growing and is a proprietary dataset consisting of the actual searches conducted by users across 170+ countries. It is GDPR compliant (no Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data) and collected from all devices, with search volume estimates generated by our statistical models.

Topic Explorer Keyword Entrance Screen Inputs

Begin your Topic Explorer research by inputting a keyword and choose between 'Intelligent Match', 'Exact Match' or 'Phrase Match'.

Enter keyword: Enter a keyword you want to use as the basis for topical research.
Country dropdown: Select the country that will be the basis for search volume in your search.
Intelligent Match vs  Exact match: Intelligent Match uses our AI-driven audience intent algorithm to seek out keywords with high audience overlap, regardless of the words they contain. Exact match limits your search to keywords that contain the keyword you enter.
Phrase Match: Phrase Match will zero in on specific variations of the keyword providing variants that could be high priority terms.

Phrase Match Use Cases

- Find more precise definitions or subcategories of a topic.
- Find different user intentions, such as the difference between "easy cake icing" and "professional cake icing"
- Maintain word order in a search when it matters (such as the difference between "chocolate milk" and "milk chocolate"), eliminating unnecessary results.

Bulk Keyword Research

Enter multiple keywords to see vast amounts of data at once, helping you identify broader trends and opportunities.

Keywords: Enter up to 100 keywords in the text field to return 1000 results per each keyword along with it's search volume. 
Exact Match: Check this selection to search and return data on the exact keyword(s) that you have entered.
Include rankings for domain (if available): This will include the ranking positions for the keywords based on the domain entered. 
Country: Select the country that will be the basis for search volume in your search.

Welcome to the heart of Topic Explorer! This is your gateway to discovering keywords that will amplify your content's reach and impact. With just a simple keyword input, you'll access a treasure trove of related search terms, complete with valuable insights into search volume and trends. 


Topic Explorer Inputs


Search: Input a keyword to see related keyword search volume data. 
Country: Select a country to see search volume data from.
Intelligent Match: Employs our proprietary AI-driven algorithm that finds relevant keywords with audience-intent overlap with the searched keyword.
Exact Match: Limits results to keywords containing the searched-for keyword.
Enable True Demand™: seoClarity's own estimate of the average monthly searches for a keyword based on clickstream data.
View Rankings: When checked, allows you to enter any domain. Upon application, a ranking column is added to the keyword table displaying the current rank position of the entered domain for each keyword.

Related Keywords: Displays a count of keywords similar to the search query. 
Total Search Volume: Displays a summary of all the Avg Search Volume based on all the Related Keywords
User Intent: Displays a percentage breakdown of intent based on the related keywords.  
    Informational: A search with this intent can indicate the user "wants to know"
    Local: A search with this intent can indicate the user "wants to go"
    Navigational: A search with this intent can indicate the user "wants to do"
    Transactional: A search with this intent can indicate the user "wants to buy"
Top SERP Features: Displays the most frequently occurring SERP Features for the keywords returned.
Search Volume Trend: Displays the month-by-month search volume for the searched keyword and all related keywords found.

Topic Explorer Table

All: Shows all related keywords found.
AI Overview: Shows keywords that trigger AI Overviews.
Answer Box Shows only keywords found in Answer Box results.
Questions: Displays only keywords that are in question form.
Live Research: Uses data from Google Keyword Planner. It only available for single keyword searches.

Keyword: The relevant keywords found for the search.
Volume: Displays the monthly average search volume within a specific country as reported by Google Keyword Planner. 
Global Volume: Displays the monthly average worldwide search demand for a keyword sourced from Google Keyword Planner, providing a benchmark to compare against country-specific demand.
Search Volume Trend: The month-by-month trend of average search volume for the past 12 months.
YoY% Change:  This is calculated by (The latest month's Search Volume - 12 month ago Search Volume) / 12 month ago's Search Volume.
Peak Month: The months within the displayed date range when Search Volume was at its highest. This may include up to three months if multiple periods had similarly high search volume.
True Demand™: seoClarity's own estimate of the average monthly searches for a keyword based on clickstream data.
Keyword Difficulty: seoClarity's proprietary score that measures how hard it is to rank for a keyword based on the strength and topical authority of the pages currently ranking.
User Intent: Blue icons indicate the most prevalent intent(s) for the keyword  
    Informational: A search with this intent can indicate the user "wants to know"
    Local: A search with this intent can indicate the user "wants to go"

Questions: The questions users see in Google's "People Also Ask" SERP box related to your topic.
Count of Keywords: Number of keywords in your topic group that trigger this specific question.

Top Sites Table

Competitor: The list of domains ranking for the discovered relevant keywords.
Keyword Count: Count of the ranking keywords found for each domain. 
​Total Search Volume: The total search volume from Google's Keyword Planner.
​Average Rank: Displays the average rank over time.
​Weighted Average Rank: Displays the weighted average rank (weighting is based on search volume) over time.
​Estd. Traffic: The total estimated organic search traffic for each domain.
​Share of Voice: Displays the share of voice percentage over time.



Industry Table



Industry: Industry categories that have relevant keywords for the entered topic. Click the arrow in front of each to expand out into subcategories
Count: The count of relevant keywords found for each industry category. Clicking the number will open a window displaying all the keywords.
Total Search Volume: The total search volume from Google's Keyword Planner for all the keywords in each industry group.

Keyword Patterns Table

Shows common patterns of keyword phrases from the relevant keywords found. An underscore on either side of the phrase indicates other word or words appear before or after the phrase. For example, "north face_" could represent "north face backpack" or "north face borealis."



Pattern: The common patterns found relevant to the searched-for keyword.
Variations: The number of variations found for that pattern. Clicking the number opens a window listing all the variations.
Total Search Volume: The sum of average search volume for all the variations for this pattern.
Avg CPC: The average cost-per-click for all the keyword variations in each patter group.

Topic Explorer Filters


Keyword: Allows for filtering of the related keywords based on the criteria: is, isn't, contains, does not contain, starts with, ends with, or a Regex pattern.
Avg Search Volume: Allows for filtering of the related keywords search volume based on the criteria: equals, greater than, less than, or between.
Keyword Difficulty: Allows for filtering of estimates how challenging it would be to rank for a specific keyword. It’s calculated using our Research Grid data and considers factors like Topical Page Authority, the visibility of ranking pages, keyword and page intent, and other key SEO signals. This score reflects how strong existing ranking pages are and how closely they align with the keyword topic.
User Intent: Allows for filtering of the keyword intent based on the 4 different types: Informational, Local, Navigational, and Transactional.
SERP Features: Allows for filtering of the related keywords based on results that include a specific universal result including: Answer Box, Local Map Listing, People Also Ask, and PPC.
YOY % Change: Allows you to filter keywords based on their year-over-year performance trends. This metric shows the percentage change in search volume compared to the same time period in the previous year.
Peak Month: Allows you to filter keywords based on the month they receive the highest search volume. This helps identify seasonal trends and understand when interest in a keyword typically peaks during the year.
Topic: Filters the keyword topic based on the criteria: is, isn't, contains, does not contain, starts with, ends with, or a Regex pattern.
True Demand: Allows you to filter keywords based on their estimated true search volume. It factors in how often a keyword is observed, how frequently it’s searched, the type of device used, and the first and last time the keyword was seen — giving a more accurate picture of real search demand.
Tracked Status: Filters results based on untracked and tracked keywords, including keyword tags.
Keyword Lists: This is available after performing any type of search in the Research Grid. This allows for the creation of keyword lists from different sections of the Research Grid. 🎞️ VIDEO: How to Create Keyword Lists
Selecting the edit icon provides the ability to: 
  • Actions: To delete a list select the checkbox next to the corresponding list and use the actions menu dropdown option. 
  • Create New List: Type in a name to create a new list.
  • List: Displays the name of created lists, select this to review keywords in this list.
  • Count: Displays the number of keywords in the list.
Keyword Tag: Allows you to filter keywords based on assigned keyword tags. You can easily assign or remove tags to organize keywords into custom categories for better tracking, analysis, and management.
Hide Variations: Allows you to filter results by grouping keyword variations.
Industries: Allows for filtering of related keywords based on specific industry.
Word Count: Allows for filtering of the number of words found in related keywords based on the criteria: equals, greater than, less than, or between. 
Intent Similarity: Allows filtering by keywords above a certain percentage of Intent Similarity, from 20% to 100%.
Search Intent: Allows for nested filtering of keywords based on the criteria: is, isn't, contains, does not contain, starts with, ends with, or a Regex pattern using AND OR statements.
Keyword Patterns: Allows for filtering of keyword patterns that are based on the searched keyword. 

Topics Filter

Displays the top words from the related keywords found, sorted by search volume (default) or count. 

Count: Displays the number of times each word is found in the related keywords. 

Search Volume: Displays the total average search volume for each of the words from Google's Keyword Planner.
